Razer Project Fiona PC Gaming Tablet
Razer Project Fiona PC Gaming Tablet
Razer takes on the portable gaming market yet again with another device that is sure to generate a whole lot of interest this CES – their Project Fiona PC Gaming Tablet. This particular concept is still in the prototype stage, so you will find many of the specifications being under wraps, just like how the Razer Switchblade was treated at last year’s edition of CES as well. Project Fiona will wave away casual gamers, considering how it packs enough firepower to handle the most popular PC games of today without missing a beat, sporting an intuitive control setup that we will look at in greater detail after the jump.

PrimeSense geared to make everything on your TV motion-controlled

While I was meandering from booth to booth at CES, I saw one display for PrimeSense, and I thought that someone was just playing Fruit Ninja for the Kinect.

Instead, I discovered PrimeSense, a way of taking control of the television with motion control, not just the video game aspect. It would appear that PrimeSense is ready to take the Kinect to the next step, and their 3D sensor, shown here in this picture, is prepared for a new future.

PrimeSense enabled me to take control of my video content. From a motion-controlled menu, I was able to select different videos by making a grabbing motion and pulling it to me. Their channel surfing menu was set up so I could see all my channels simultaneously, and I could select one with the grabbing method.

BluCan Bluetooth Vibration Speaker and Speakerphone from GiiNii

BluCan Bluetooth Vibration Speaker and Speakerphone from GiiNii

GiiNii, makers of the AudioBulb, had a new product on display at CES with the BluCan.

The BluCan is a Bluetooth speaker that is a little smaller than a can of soda. What you can’t see in this picture is that one twist will cause it to elongate so it is taller. The BluCan can seamlessly pair with Bluetooth enabled devices, in order to play your music off the headphones and on the go. When it is resting on a flat, solid surface, it becomes a 360 speaker capable of good range.

Of course, there are a lot of speakers that can do that. The BluCan has an integrated speaker, so you can actually use it as a phone when it is wirelessly connected. By the way, the Blucan has controls for play, pause, track forward, track backward, as well as answer, volume, and hang-up. So if your phone is charging across the room, you can still have the power of your speaker.

I’m not certain when the BluCan is due out, but it will be sometime this year. I also don’t have a price either. By the way, GiiNii also announced that the AudioBulb will be in a smaller size, in case you wanted to know.

Turtle Beach graces CES 2012 with Ear Force XP400 and XP300 premium wireless gaming headsets

Turtle Beach graces CES 2012 with Ear Force XP400 and XP300 premium wireless gaming headsets

CES 2012 sees the debut of two more premium gaming headsets from Turtle Beach – the Ear Force XP400 and XP300, where you can see the former depicted above. Both models have been specially optimized for wireless game audio and chat on the Xbox 360, not to mention playing nice with the Sony PS3 as well. These headsets deliver whole new levels of convenience and versatility, while ensuring the renowned game audio performance that is associated with Turtle Beach as well.

With the new XP400 and XP300 headsets, wireless Bluetooth chat will also be a staple feature, something that only the acclaimed XP500 headset previously offered, helping those who are on a tighter budget to get more bang for their hard-earned buck. Apart from that, rechargeable batteries and new 5GHz dual-band Wi-Fi RF wireless technology will make sure that you will more or less do away with interference even when there are wireless networks at home.

Razer Naga Hex gaming mouse

Razer Naga Hex gaming mouse

Gaming is serious business, and for those who take their frags and RTS strategies seriously, then surely high-end hardware is the name of the game for such gamers. CES 2012 proved to be a potent platform for Razer to continue with their serpentine collection of gaming peripherals, with the latest one being the Razer Naga Hex gaming mouse. Yes sir, their latest gaming mouse will feature half a dozen thumb buttons that was specially designed for MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), action-RPG and hack and slash genres.

The inspiration behind the Naga Hex? Its predecessor of sorts, the award-winning Razer Naga MMO gaming mouse came with a 12-button thumb grid, so the Razer Naga Hex now sports six large thumb buttons that have been optimized for the user interfaces found in action-RPG and MOBA games.

Take a Chill Pill: Mini Capsule Speakers Let You Rock Out Anywhere

Mini Chill Pill
Mini Chill Pill speakers are only 2" tall and 2" around, but deliver big sound (Photos: Chill Pill Audio)

Headphones are great, but they keep you tethered to your music source. (And don’t let you hear when Marge from accounting announces there are donuts in the conference room.) Desk speakers work, but they don’t travel well. So if you want to rock out and be able to take your tunes with you, take a Chill Pill.

The Chill Pill is a pocket-sized, completely self-contained capsule that transforms into a pair of rechargeable powered speakers with just a twist. Only 2″ around and 4″ long when stuck together via magnets in their bases, twist them apart, pull the retractable connectivity cables out, plug and play.

Mini Chill Pill
Twist apart, pop the tops and they're ready to rock

I’ve been trying out a pair and the sound is bigger than their size implies. Plus they can handle some volume. Should you like your music with a little more bass, the tops pop up to deliver some. The 18″ connection cord between the Pills is plenty to let you place them on either side of an average laptop, and are still small enough to fit on any desk or even an airplane tray table. How ya like Daughtry’s new album, screaming baby in the row behind me?

$39.99 Available in White, Red, Black, Pink, Purple and Reggae.

Turn Your House into a Smart Home with Your iPhone: SmartThings

Turn Your House into a Smart Home with Your iPhone: SmartThings

Imagine being able to control things in your house remotely, right from an app on your iPhone, such as turning on or off the lights or air conditioner. Imagine being able to be notified immediately if your pipes burst and your house is flooding, or if your dog escapes from the backyard.

If this Kickstarter project gets funded (and it looks like it’s well on its way), in the future we could monitor, automate, and control a variety of different things in our house with just a couple of taps on our phone’s screen.

“Your world, smarter. SmartThings makes it easy to connect the things in your physical world to the Internet. You can monitor, control, automate, and have fun with them from anywhere – at home or abroad, city or country. We’ve made it possible to install apps that mash up and interact with your SmartThings, as well as online and other services, unlocking a world of possibilities and unlimited potential to make your life easier, more convenient and fun. We call these SmartApps.” – SmartThings

At the heart of the SmartThings system is the central hub, which can be connected wirelessly to outlets and various types of devices and sensors (called Things), including door locks, temperature sensors, light switches, smoke alarms, thermostats, and vibration and pressure sensors. Once connected, these devices can be monitored and controlled via apps right from your iPhone.

Cassette-to-iPod Converter Lets You Still Make Mixtapes for that Special Someone

Cassette-to-iPod converter
If you’re old enough to remember the glory days of the 1980s, you’ll remember when mix tapes were the ultimate form of affection. Before there was room for unlimited digital track listings in iTunes playlists, Spotify, or Pandora, one had to carefully choose a selection of songs that would fit conveniently on a blank 60 or 90 minute cassette tape. And with those limitations came creativity, especially when trying to come up with songs that represent how you feel about a special someone. To quote John Cusack’s character in the movie High Fidelity:

The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway… I’ve started to make a tape… in my head… for Laura. Full of stuff she likes. Full of stuff that make her happy…

These days, the act of making a mixtape is a dying art form, mostly because there’s no convenient way to play a cassette; a lot of that outdated technology is most likely in a landfill. But have no fear, believers in the romantic actions of the 80s! Thanks to gadget and adult toy retailer Hammacher Schlemmer (and a tip from Incredible Things), you can still make your mix tapes and listen to them too — with the Cassette-to-iPod Converter. Alternatively, you can dig up the old mixtapes you still have laying around from the past, and stroll down memory lane about that special someone that gave it to you, or the one who broke your heart because you still have it.

The Cassette-to-iPod Converter can simply play cassettes and output the music via your iPhone’s speakers or headphone jack, or can even convert the tracks to MP3 format — which will totally update you to the 21st century. Just think; you can play a mixtape without having to fast forward through the songs you don’t like — by simply pushing once to choose the next track.

Shimi, Your Musical Robot Companion, Wants the Next Dance

 Shimi
Shimi, the interactive musical robot, picks music, follows you around the room and dances
Does your speaker dock pick music for you, create new compositions, follow your movements around the room and dance with you? No? Then it’s time to Shimi.

More than just a speaker doc, the new Shimi — named after the dance move, the “Shimmy” and developed by a team of roboticists from Georgia Tech, IDC Herzliya and the MIT Media Lab — is an intelligent, interactive, music-loving robot that serves as both a premium speaker system and dance partner. And it’s downright amazing.

Shimi’s “head” is a set of high-quality speakers with an optimized shape for ideal sound reproduction. But a lot of speaker docks have that. What takes Shimi beyond just producing the ultimate in sound is that Shimi uses your iPhone as its brain, allowing it to not only know and understand your music, but to also know and understand what moves you.
 Shimi

Shimi dances with you... girl not included

Once the music starts, Shimi takes the stage. Five strategically placed motors allow it to dance to the beat of any song, with a variety of dance moves that fit the specific song and genre. Just try and watch its head bob to the music and not join in, I dare you.

As your musical companion, Shimi always knows where you are in the room and points the speakers toward you. It also has the ability to react to humans, using advanced facial and speech recognition algorithms so Shimi will also respond to your voice, your taps, your gestures, learn your musical preferences and even recommend new music for you.

“In a way, Shimi started out as an animated character. We worked to nail down his personality and then we transferred that into the robot,” said Guy Hoffman, Chief Technology Officer. “The result is that Shimi doesn’t just play your music, he actually listens to it and enjoys it as much as you do.” (The day this thing greets me at the door and says, “Hey, have you heard the new Mumford & Sons single? It’s. Just. Ridiculous.” is the day I start checking it for a Cyberdyne Systems logo…)

Shimi is targeting store shelves for February 2013, but you can preorder your Shimi today by backing their Kickstarter campaign. For just $149 you’ll get to bring home one of the first Shimi’s off the line, and save $50 off the projected retail price. And you’ll never dance alone again.

A Personal Weather Station for Your iPhone: Netatmo

A Personal Weather Station for Your iPhone: Netatmo
Netatmo
Imagine having a mini personal weather station at your own house, one that allows you to monitor and track the outside temperature, humidity, air quality, and atmospheric pressure, right from your iPhone or iPad. Now imagine being able to also monitor and track the inside temperature, humidy, CO2 levels, and indoor air quality.

Well, you’re in luck, because if you’re weather-obsessed, meteorologically-inclined, or your daily activities depend on knowing the current conditions outside, the Netatmo Urban Weather Station is for you.

With two sleek aluminum sensor bodies – one for inside and one for outside – measuring the data, an iPhone/iPad app for viewing and sharing it, realtime air quality and weather alerts, and cloud data storage backing it all up, the Netatmo system can help you decide the best (and worst) times for watering the garden, going for a run, riding your bike to work, or making your kids go outside to play. The app also features a 7-day weather forecast, and for those who live in areas with plenty of noise pollution, the sensors also measure and track the sound levels (from 35 dB to 120 dB).

This Belt-Driven Beauty Is the Ultimate Steampunk Wristwatch

This Belt-Driven Beauty Is the Ultimate Steampunk Wristwatch

When you’ve already built one of the most unique belt-driven watches around, what do you do for an encore? Well, you can take that innovative analog watch, add brass gears and cogs to the works inside it, wrap it in a beautiful bronze-clad case, add steel rivets, springs and screws, and turn it into one of the ultimate steampunk accessories, of course.

The Devon Tread 1 made waves when it was released, as its novel design uses four “interwoven time belts”, just 2 microns thick, which are driven by four microstep motors, powered by rechargeable lithium polymer batteries. But the steampunk version of the Tread is head and shoulders above the first one, at least as far as design details and style are concerned.

Portable mCAMLITE Turns Your iPhone Into a Versatile Video Camera

mCAMLITE
The mCAMLITE turns your iPhone into a top-level video camera (Images: Action Life Media)

Yes, you can use your iPhone as a more than decent video camera, but if you want to get better, more professional results, wrap it in an mCAMLITE.

Made from aircraft-grade billet aluminum, the mCAMLITE not only protects your iPhone when climbing on rocks to get the perfect angle, but it gives it the weight and heft you need to stabilize your hands while shooting.

And because the pros don’t just use one standard lens when pushing for the perfect shot, the kit comes with two 37mm interchangeable lenses: a wide angle for capturing everything you want in the scene, and a macro when you want to get up close and personal. Together, they give you the chance to get shots that are downright impossible with the iPhone’s lens.

Since the best videos have sound, the mCAMLITE comes with a 180-degree external microphone, allowing you to capture directional sound and reduce ambient noise, so your YouTube fans can hear every note of your keyboard-playing cat…

The mCAMLITE’s housing is designed with consideration of your growth as an auteur. It has mounts on top and bottom for accessories and tripods, and has a cold shoe on top for pro quality mics and lights. They even offer a pair of action carts so you can slide your cam along to get smooth action shots. So as you get better and demand more from your cam, the mCAMLITE can oblige.

At only $159.95 it’s the perfect starter kit for any visionary filmmaker (or photographer), to add to their portfolio without spending a fortune. Don’t quote me on this, but I think this is how Scorsese got started…

Digital Watch with Touchscreen and Apps is Like Having a Tablet on Your Wrist

Remember how the geeks in school always wore those super nerdy digital watches that had functions that found the sine and cosine of whatever, and had all the design esthetic of a Radio Shack leftover bin?

Well imagine what would happen if the cool kids got a chance to design their own digital watch, and you’d get the new Touch Time from Phosphor.

It doesn’t get any cooler than Nike+ designer Stefan Andren, who is the aesthetic genius behind the Touch Time. It’s got a slick black and white touchscreen instead of those tiny buttons, allowing you to swipe to change from screen to screen and function to function. It also lets you customize the screen, choosing from 7 different watch dials, depending on your mood and style.

Touch Time lets you choose your face, depending on mood and style

Because our phones, tablets and even cars now run apps, they decided our watch should too. The Touch Time apps include an Alarm clock, Stopwatch, Calendar, Reminders, World Time that tracks up to 6 different time zones, Lunar Phases, and yes, even a Calculator. Just tap the app to access, and touch the screen to operate.

It also runs a number of apps, from a calendar to a lunar phase tracker to a calculator

It never needs to be synched or charged, the replaceable battery will run the Touch Time for a year or so, and it comes in a variety of colors and materials, including silicone, stainless steel and webbing. A far cry from the digital watches of yesteryear that came in some sort of silver coated metal that discolored and peeled after a while. I’m going to stop just short of calling it “geek chic” and instead just be happy there is finally a digital watch for those of us who don’t speak Klingon or plan on being a virgin until our late forties.

Electronic Lost & Found Recovers Your Lost Gear, Gadgets, Luggage, Keys, Even Pets

Electronic Lost & Found Recovers Your Lost Gear, Gadgets, Luggage, Keys, Even Pets

FinderCodes can increase the chance you'll get your lost stuff back (Photos: FinderCodes)

Wouldn’t it be awesome if your lost dog could send you a text to let you know where he is? Or if your briefcase could call you to come pick it up after you left it in a cab? That’s the genius behind FinderCodes, an electronic lost and found system that lets your missing, left behind, escaped and misplaced gear, gadgets, equipment, keys, luggage, bikes, electronics, pets and more, contact you to let you know where it is.

Created as a co-branded product with AT&T, FinderCodes can improve your chances of getting your stuff back by giving the good samaritan who found it an easy way to get ahold of you. All in complete anonymity for both of you. The finder just scans the QR code on the FinderCodes tag with their smartphone, and they are given options to message, call or email you with its whereabouts. And it happens instantly, so if you’re still in the area where you lost whatever it is, you can head back over.

The finder will never know your phone number or email address, eliminating the chance they’ll become a stalker. You also have the option to offer a reward, and FinderCodes will up the reward ante by giving the finder a free kit of their own, just for returning your stuff.

FinderCodes makes 7 different kits, including the 4 above

FinderCodes makes 7 different kits for specific items: Electronics, Travel, Home, School Stuff, Pet Owner, Kid Stuff, and Baby Things. (Those last two are for kid and baby stuff… not the actual kid or baby. Although that’s not a bad idea…) Each kit comes with whatever tags are necessary and convenient to attach to your stuff, like key tags, adhesive tags and iron-on tags.

Best of all, there are no monthly fees (that usually add up costing more than you’d pay to replace the thing you lost in the first place). You just buy the $24.99 kit, attach the tags and you’re good to go. There’s also a 30 day money-back guarantee, which is good, especially if the thing you tend to lose most is money.

BoostTurbine Powers Your Gear Even When There’s No Power Source

BoostTurbine Powers Your Gear Even When There’s No Power Source
BoostTurbine
Hand cranking gives you the power to power your phone when there is no outlet in sight (Photos: Eton Corp)

Bringing a portable charger along on a camping trip or hike is always a good idea, but if the trip keeps you away from civilization for longer than your porto-batt can survive, you could be outta luck when it comes time to send that emergency call or text. Or you could pack a BoostTurbine charger.

That’s because the durable BoostTurbine Series portable chargers can provide your devices with power even when there is no power source. Because you are the power source.
BoostTurbine

Both the the BoostTurbine2000 and BoostTurbine1000 come equipped with a hand-turbine power generator to serve as a “back up for your back up solution.” Literally providing you with never-ending power, both feature a rechargeable lithium battery that, when there’s no outlet in sight, can get juice just from cranking.

With only one minute of cranking, the hand turbine power generator can produce enough power for a quick call or a few texts. Enough to get you out of trouble. When fully charged, the $59 BoostTurbine2000 can provide a full charge to most smartphones, and the $49 BoostTurbine1000 will give you a 50 percent charge. (Personally, I’d spend the extra $10 bucks for the full charge ability. Less cranking, more relaxing.)
BoostTurbine

The 1000 comes in Black, the 2000 comes in Black, White, Silver and Red

Both models are made of lightweight aluminum to put up with some punishment, and are compact enough to carry in your pocket. And both feature a Micro-USB DC input (cable included), a standard USB port, and an LED charge indicator to let you know the battery charge level. (So you know when to stop cranking.) Go ahead, venture deeper… you know you’ll have power when you need it. (A cell signal? That we can’t promise.)

Star Wars R2-D2 Inflatable R/C

Star Wars R2-D2 Inflatable R/C

The world’s – or should I say, the galaxy’s most beloved astromech droid, R2-D2, has just gotten yet another boost to its portfolio of devices and toys that will further enslave the minds and wallets of parents (and Star Wars fans) everywhere, coming in the form of the $59.99 Star Wars R2-D2 Inflatable R/C. Yes sir, can you say that this is the ultimate galactic accessory?

Since this is one R2-D2 that is inflatable, it is a good thing each purchase will be accompanied by a pump for easy inflation, instead of you having to huff and puff your way while roping in the help of a certain Big Bad Wolf. Unfortunately, while you cannot send any kind of holographic messages on this puppy, this inflatable and feisty droid measures over 65cm in height, and has detachable drive units that ensure R2-D2 remains compatible with other Star Wars characters. You can opt to spin it 360 degrees, drive forward, back, turn to both left and right, and get this – in the indomitable spirit of R2-D2, it also boasts of a self-righting system that ensures it remains upright even when knocked over or driven down stairs. Up to 3 units can be driven at once for some R2-D2 mayhem at home, and the handset requires a single 9V battery, while the drive unit runs not on lightsaber crystals, but a quartet of AA batteries.

Boombox Metal Wristwatch

Boombox Metal Wristwatch

Now here is a “boomtastic” timepiece to wear around your wrist, where it merges the old school with the new. The $89.99 Boombox Metal Wristwatch comes with an LCD digital time display, allowing you to read the time at but a glance. Sure, it is not going to consume a whole lot of D batteries unlike boomboxes of old, and it will be unable to play back your favorite MP3s (although we do wish that there was an edition that could, but then again, it would mean a pretty big wristwatch to accommodate the larger battery), but at the very least it conveys a sense of style to those who come across your path.

Features of the Boombox Metal Wristwatch include a locking clasp, side push buttons, and a display that will shut itself off automatically after just three seconds in order to conserve battery life in the long run. I do not think that this is suitable for action at a corporate boardroom meeting, but it might be the ideal Christmas gift for your teen who is into all things retro. Surely he will be the envy of his friends, don’t you think so?
